Have you ever wondered the point to the song "The 12 Days of Christmas?" I HAVE!! A lot! What do any of those 12 things have to do with Christmas? Well I began researching this in November and I am so glad I did! It turns out to have A LOT of Christmas meaning to it! SO even though I have not blogged about our Christmas Day yet, mostly due to the fact we were to tired to download the pictures last night, I will catch up with that tonight maybe. But Today i am going to start the process of explaining that Christmas Carol that none of us really know what it means but it is a traditional song to sing at Christmas. 12 Days of Christmas
This song dates back to the 16th century while there were religious wars going on in England. The song was created and each verse memorized by children to help make remembering their faith. It was to also help teach the children their Catechism with out the authorities knowing since they could have been imprisoned for their faith. The counting started on Christmas day( I am a day behind but I will catch up today) and then each day up until January 6 which is the day of Epiphany. What we celebrate as a family as 3 Kings day. I will blog on that later too. In the song, a gift is given by "my True Love" which refers to God and "Me" refers to ....Me the Christian. Now that I figured out myself. Now on the the rest of the song.
"On the First day of Christmas my True Love gave to Me.... A Partridge in a pear tree."
December 25th is the First Day of Christmas, God sent Jesus to earth to be like a partridge in a pear tree. A mother partridge will draw predators away from her nest of eggs, by pretending to be hurt and sometimes even sacrificing themselves to save their chicks. The verse that went along with this day was Luke 13:34 "Jerusalem, Jerusalem, How often would I have sheltered you under my wing as a hen does her chicks"
Now on a side note and just to be interesting, if you were to buy these things gifts in 2012, the first day of Christmas would cost you $15 for a Partridge and $189.99 for a pear tree. So the cost of your first Day of Christmas comes out to $204.99
"On the Second Day of Christmas my True Love gave to me..... 2 Turtle Doves"
What are 2 turtle doves? I had no idea, I always pictures a turtle flying around with dove wings... Yeah probably not the meaning of the song. Actually 2 Turtle Doves symbolise the Old and New Testment. These two parts of the bible reveal to us the world before Jesus and then the spread of the Gospel through the world after Jesus came.
So on this day if you were to buy the gifts of this song you would be paying... $329.99
On the Second Day of Christmas my True Love gave to me..... 2 Turtle Doves ~ $125
And A Partridge in a pear tree." ~$204.99
