Ok, so the events in Galena are always events to remember!! Since Keith and I have moved here we have had a blast getting to attend all the community events. In a small town like Galena you meet all the people in town at these events and it keeps you from getting lonely. I can see how people would get lonely in a isolated town like this if they did not become part of the community. This summer was a lonely time since a lot of the people leave during the summer because a lot of them are teachers at the school and since they have the summer off that is the time they go home and visit family. Keith and I stayed here this summer besides our trip to town to buy all our food for the next year. But during the time we were at home Keith grew his garden. In the post before this you got to see some of the produce he grew. Well at the end of the summer Galena hosts the Galena Agricultural Fair. I must say this is and was a highlight of my year so far. It was AWESOME to be a part of the community and show off all the veggies we grew and see all the other peoples great growing ability plus all the crafts that people make and the quilts people saw!!. I must say Keith and I have some work to do to compete with some of the awesome stuff grown here. Keith was not here for the weekend of the Fair which was unfortunate but Kaden and I did get to help register all the veggies and fruit. It was fun to see them as they all came in. I entered Keith's Giant Cabbage, a Giant Lettuce, and one of my quilts that I had finished this year.
Here is Keith's giant Cabbage in the truck getting ready to head to the fair. It was huge and heavy! Oh and beside it was his Giant Lettuce.
The Community Hall with all the tables and booths set up
Jams, Cakes, breads, Fruit, Veggies, Flower arrangements, and potted plants grown.
Kids get to enter their own foods and vegetables so get to get prizes too.
The Veggie Table
The Giant Category Table
Keith's Lettuce is in the middle and Kentons GIANT zucchini. Yeah I bet you can make a lot of bread with that!!
Here are the Giant Cabbage growers.
Kaden is representing Daddy since he was gone, Then you have Hawken and Larry
More people getting ready to race.
Some of these are different races with some of the same adults guiding the boats.
It was fun to watch and the kids had a blast!
Racing back to shore
During the day people can guess the weight of the cabbages and the winner of the closest to the exact weight gets to take the giant cabbage home.At the end of the day everyone gathers in the community hall to see who wins any door prizes (which Kaden and I both won something) and then the last event of the day is the announcements of the Giant Vegatable winners. Tim annouced all the winners and the records set. Keith got a Galena record breaking Lettuce of 2 pounds and then everyone gets to hear the Giant Cabbage weigh in.
Here is Tim recording the weight of the cabbages. We all hold our breathe to see who is winning this year. Keith Ramos or Larry Houseman(who wins EVERY YEAR~!!!)
And the winner is............ a TIE BETWEEN LARRY AND KEITH RAMOS!!!!!!
WITH A WINNING CABBAGE OF 23.5 Pound!!!
This was Awesome since it is Keith's first year here and everyone expects Larry to Win. We await till next year to see who brings the heat and wins!=)=) So much excitement I called Keith who was in Florida and was so happy that he tied for BIGGEST!!
(After the excitement wore off I had to figure out what to do with a 23 POUND cabbage. Anyone know any great Recipes. hahahaha I had to rearrange all my shelves in the fridge to make room for that Cabbage.=)
